The Brief

Overview

The Vineyard Hotel is one of Cape Town’s most iconic heritage spaces, known for its lush gardens, historic architecture, and longstanding connection to arts and culture. As a favourite destination for locals and international visitors, the brand needed a digital presence that reflected its elevated yet welcoming identity.

Challenge

The existing website didn’t convey the warmth, atmosphere, and character that define the hotel. The goal was to refresh the brand in a digital context, ensuring the online experience carries through the charm, heritage, and visual richness that guests fall in love with on arrival, while also improving usability and encouraging direct bookings.

Solution

We delivered a full UX and UI redesign paired with refined brand execution. By thoughtfully incorporating visual elements inspired by the hotel’s interiors, gardens, and architectural details, we created a digital experience that feels unmistakably “Vineyard.” The result is a sophisticated, intuitive platform that strengthens the hotel’s identity and streamlines the booking journey.

Inspired by the Essence

Before we began designing, we set out to understand what makes The Vineyard so loved. Our team visited the hotel, met with the incredible staff, explored the restaurants, and soaked in the heritage that lives in every corner, from the lush gardens to the resident tortoises that wander through the foyer.

By immersing ourselves in the atmospheric charm, we were able to uncover the essence of the hotel and translate that feeling into a digital expression of being there in person.

The Devil's in the Detail

To capture the authenticity of The Vineyard, we rooted the visual design in its physical surroundings. We drew from the soft mint tones found in the wall panelling, the terracotta of the floors, the natural creams and warm wood textures, as well as the lush greens and river blues that define the estate.

The result: a contemporary yet timeless feel, reflecting the hotel’s classical heritage and elegance.

Our Role

Website UX and UI Design

We restructured the website to create a clearer, more intuitive journey, placing emphasis on the booking flow and critical interaction paths. Balancing usability with visual storytelling, we created a curated journey through the hotel experience.

Digital Brand Refresh

We evolved the digital expression of the existing brand by refining the colour palette, fonts and textures to feel both modern and true to the heritage of The Vineyard.

Custom Iconography

To avoid generic symbols, we developed bespoke iconography rooted in the physical environment, inspired by details discovered while walking the gardens and exploring key spaces.

We were also tasked with designing a bespoke set of icons that genuinely reflected the physical experience of being at The Vineyard. Rather than relying on generic symbol libraries, we hand-drew icons of the estate firsthand from wandering the gardens to sitting on the patio at Morii, capturing the character of each moment in a visual language unique to the hotel.

A Digital Doorway

Motion and the sense of stepping into the hotel itself brought subtle touches of personality to the interface, helping the website feel grounded in place. Gentle movement, interactions, and inclusion of video draws the user into a sensory experience of The Vineyard, creating a digital atmosphere that feels warm, immersive, and true to the estate.

Showcasing Sleep

A key priority of the redesign was to elevate the accommodation offering and streamline the booking journey. From garden-facing rooms to contemporary suites, we ensured each space could shine through large-format imagery, clear room descriptions, and thoughtful pathways into the booking flow.

Sleep, Eat, Meet, Play

We structured the website around the core pillars of the hotel: Sleep, Eat, Meet and Pay, each designed to feel immersive and true to the experience on-site.

By leveraging the hotel’s strong photographic style and pairing it with intuitive navigation, users are guided into rich content hubs that invite exploration. Our goal was to ensure that no matter where a user begins their journey, they are naturally led toward discovering the breadth of what The Vineyard offers.
